4-H Youth Development

The mission of the Indian River County 4-H Program
is to assist youth in their quest to become mature, competent adults
through a planned educational process that leads to the development
of practical knowledge, skills and personal traits.
The goal of Indian River County 4-H is to provide the 4-H learning process
to as many youth in as many subject matter areas as can be developed,
depending upon available volunteer leaders.
Four-H is Extension's educational program for youth. It is available
to all youth between the ages of 8 to 18. In addition, there are
special projects for youth aged 5 to 8 where adult leadership is available.
Youngsters can participate in 4-H through membership in 4-H clubs, school
enrichment programs and special interest programs. Summer camps
are also available. Some of the popular project areas 4-H members
in Indian River County include the animal sciences - beef cattle, swine,
horses, dog obedience and rabbits and citrus trees. Other project
areas available include natural resources, foods and nutrition, textiles
and clothing, child developments, and horticulture. These programs
are managed by Extension staff with the primary support of volunteers
and parents from the community.
Four-H's philosophy is for youth to "learn by doing" so they
acquire knowledge and practical skills. Four-H activities build
leadership skills, a healthy self-image, encourage responsibility and
team work. Adults who enjoy young people are welcome to become
involved as 4-H volunteer leaders. Volunteers are trained by Extension
staff to work directly with youth in club and special interest programs
or to serve on the Indian River County 4-H Advisory Committee.
